Welcome to Provocative Church

As you browse, read and share the many articles, our hope is that you may find this site an encouragement to your faith and Christian life.

We were created to worship. And we are to worship God with every aspect and area of our lives - presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.

The Church

The bride of Christ can often times be difficult and messy - but it is Christ's beautiful mess - to which He is the head and chief cornerstone.

Ancient Future

Our faith comes out from a rich heritage and history. It was during the formative years of our faith that creeds, confessions, traditions, and liturgies were developed. These practices and traditions recaptured will not only anchor us but move us forward in our faith.

There is freedom in the gospel as it proclaims that in Christ we are sons and daughters of the King. The importance is learning to preach those truths to our heart and life everyday.

Free For 2 Days Only! - That's A Great Question

That’s a GREAT Question by my friend Glenn Pearson, is only available FREE for two days only, so make sure to grab your copy today!

Believers and non-believers will be interested in this free eBook that helps to understand the presuppositions people have about God, and tackles many apparent contradictions in the Bible.

On entering college, Glenn Pearson says, “I had no use for Christians who took the Bible seriously;” however, he came to faith in Christ, and then spent nine years on staff with Cru. He repeatedly heard the same questions about the Christian faith. “This led me to the concept of faith filters that allow skeptics to justify their philosophical and theological positions by using their own presuppositions to dismiss the parts of the Bible they don’t like,” he explains.

Check out this excerpt which defines the five basic filters that Glenn uses throughout his book. Glenn recommends his book for believers and nonbelievers.

Download your copy on Thursday, January 30th until late Friday night, January 31st. Visit www.dccebooks.com today and tomorrow, clicking on the book cover to get the free download (in various formats including Kindle, iBook, and Nook).

A Unified Whole

I am currently reading, for my D.Min work, Clowney's book on the Bible as being a grand narrative concerning God's redemptive plan for you and I. I remember how this concept and understanding revolutionized how I saw and understood the Bible early in my faith. This is what's so amazing about the Scriptures, that despite the Bible being a collection of 66 books, written over centuries by many authors, it remains and communicates a unified story.
THE BIBLE IS A UNITY. That is, perhaps, the most amazing of all the amazing things that are true of it. It consists of sixty-six separate units, written over more than a thousand years against a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, by people who for the most part worked independently of each other and show no awareness that their books would become canonical Scripture. The books themselves are of all kinds: prose jostling poetry, hymns rubbing shoulders with history, sermons with statistics, letters with liturgies, lurid visions with a love song.

Money Worship

Money can become a spiritual addiction, and like all addictions it hides its true proportions from its victims. We take more and greater risks to get an ever diminishing satisfaction from the thing we crave, until a breakdown occurs. When we begin to recover, we ask, ‘What were we thinking? How could we have been so blind?’ We wake up like people with a hangover who can hardly remember the night before. But why? Why did we act so irrationally? Why did we completely lose sight of what is right? The Bible’s answer is that the human heart is an ‘idol factory.’
When most people think of ‘idols’ they have in mind literal statues – or the next pop star anointed by Simon Cowell. Yet while traditional idol worship still occurs in many places of the world, internal idol worship, within the heart, is universal. In Ezekiel 14: 3, God says about elders of Israel, ‘These men have set up their idols in their hearts.’ Like us, the elders must have responded to this charge, ‘Idols? What idols? I don’t see any idols.’
God was saying that the human heart takes good things like a successful career, love, material possessions, even family, and turns them into ultimate things. Our hearts deify them as the center of our lives, because, we think, they can give us significance and security, safety and fulfillment, if we attain them.

Happy New Year

Lamentations 3:22-24
The unfailing love of the LORD never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day. I say to myself, "The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!" (NASB)
Have a blessed New Year with your family and friends!
