I finished reading the Simple Church by Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger on my vacation after Christmas. I couldn't put this book down. Jon, our lead pastor, had read it earlier and was raving about it. I was skeptical at first. Simple church?? Nothing is simple, nothing is easy. If there is one thing that I know, ministry is complex, very complex. So I was thinking that the book was another bunch of hype, and if I just ignored it, it would just disappear. Needless to say, I broke down and read it, and boy, was I wrong. This book challenged my socks off, and I would love to share some of my thoughts about it throughout the next several weeks in this blog. I hope to benefit the most in this attempt to share my thoughts about this book. I am a verbal processor, I think out loud. And I need to think out loud about this book. I hope you all will refine my thinking as well by commenting to my posts. If you want to read along, you can buy the book here.

Bill,
On a scale of 1-10, is this book an 8 or higher? I'm always looking for provocative reading, but so much seems so good until you get into it. Worth the price?

Ron,
I would say it is an eight or higher. The book really resonated with me and our staff because the book answered the questions we were asking, and it came at a time in the place of our church were we are ready to step up to plate and get serious about seeing men and women become mature followers of Christ. I would be curious to find out your feedback on the book. So although I know it is expensive, I think it is worth the money. Also I have been reading this book in conjunction with "Transforming Disciples" by Ogden. That book has complimenting my thinking on these issues as well. I have both books posted in my Amazon Store (shameless plug)

Hi, Bill.
I'm wondering if ther's a way we can help each other. I too am a book lover but my greatest hindrance is the finances to buy all the books I should read, need to read, must read.
Not sure how we could do this but here's a starter thought. Since we're both booklovers, I think our books would be in good hands with one another.
Perhaps once a quarter, you and I could each buy a book the other wants to read, let's say up to $20. Read it first, then send it. That way, we have access to good reading material but don't always have to buy every book.
Maybe try it once and see how it works? Just a thought.
You're a brave man lending your books to your church people. I've lost so many books over the years doing that that I've become skeptical. But I know you're right. Loss is not a valid excuse to hoard all that resource to myself. I can't be selfish.
